Snow Sisters Is A Storystorm Success Story (After 8 Years Of Idea Collecting & Combining)!

by Kerri Kokias I’ve been quietly participating in Storystorm (formerly PiBoIdMo) since 2009. You know the type, the writer who lurks on the sidelines, observing and taking notes, but not necessarily being vocal in the comments. Well, it’s time for me to speak up! I owe Storystorm a big THANK YOU for helping me come up with the idea for my debut picture book, SNOW SISTERS!, which is illustrated by Teagan White and being published by Knopf in January. Actually, many of my current manuscripts incorporate elements of ideas I came up with in Novembers and Januaries past, and Storystorm has also changed the way I recognize and record ideas throughout the year. I always think it’s funny when Storystorm participants ask, “What counts as an idea?” For me, it’s any thought that gives me a little tingle or flash of curiosity. I’ve never tried to come up with 30 developed book ideas. Instead I record little bits of inspiration. I may think of a potential character, a structure, a title, a nonfiction topic, a plot or concept idea, or even just a few words that I like the sound of together. I jot the idea down by category and when I’m ready to start a new story I pull out my list and combine ideas from here and there. For SNOW SISTERS! I had the idea of writing a story in mirrored language in 2010. I took note of the idea but never tried to do anything with it. In 2012, I made a note about writing a story about sisters who were opposites. In 2013, I took note when an editor questioned on Twitter why there weren’t any books about characters who hated the snow. I pulled out my idea list and brainstormed ways that the different past pieces of inspiration could work with that concept. Through the process of writing and revising, the story didn’t end up implementing the ideas in the way I first thought; the sisters aren’t exactly opposite, they just have their own distinct personalities, which gives them room to connect in unexpected ways. And neither hate the snow, they just interact with it differently. And that specific editor didn’t connect with the story…but someone else did! And now, 8 years after its first piece of inspiration, it’s a book! So, thank you to Tara, all of her guest bloggers, and all of the participants over the years for keeping Storystorm going strong! I very much look forward to being a participant and guest blogger this coming January. Kerri’s writing features unique structures, playful language, humor, tension, tenderness, simple text, and complicated characters. She has a good vision for how text and art can work together to tell a complete story. Kerri credits most of her story ideas to her “fly on the wall” personality. This means she’s both a keen observer of social interactions and a nosey eavesdropper. She lives in Seattle, Washington with her husband, two children, and three dogs. Dont Say This in Your Next Tech Job Interview

Try not to Say This in Your Next Tech Job Interview Try not to Say This in Your Next Tech Job Interview As an IT selecting firm, we get notification from applicants about a great deal of awful prospective employee meet-up counsel. Or on the other hand more regrettable, at times we catch wind of a competitor placing this counsel vigorously! This input uncovered the one thing that competitors ought to never tell a questioner. Employment searchers ought to never say, I'm the most qualified contender for the activity. This one expression isn't just awful meeting counsel, however it can tank your odds for an incredible occupation. For what reason is this horrendous advice? Isn't it acceptable to be sure and express enthusiasm for the job? truly, telling your questioner that you're really great contender for the activity doesn't generally achieve either task well. First, telling your questioner that you're the most qualified up-and-comer exhibits that you settle on critical choices absent a lot of thought or examination . Incredible applicants, particularly in the tech space, are searching for an occupation that is a solid match on both ends. This implies the up-and-comer has all the specialized aptitudes and experience recorded in an occupation posting. But it likewise implies that the organization and the work can meet the activity searcher's needs. A meeting is tied in with sussing out whether the activity is a solid match for the two gatherings tech proficient and employer. Good up-and-comers don't have the foggiest idea whether they're the 'most ideal possibility for the activity' for some reasons, particularly in light of the fact that they don't have a clue whether the activity will address their own issues as a representative ! Another explanation you ought to never tell a questioner you're really great contender for the activity is that you can appear to be hard to work with and arrogant. Making yourself appear to be hard to work with is typically the kiss of death for your bid. Nowadays , conveying and functioning admirably with groups is a basic aptitude in most IT employments. Prodded by the quick pace of the web, organizations are compelled to continually advance and improve their items or administrations. They regularly accomplish this consistent development with bunch conceptualizes and collaboration. To arrive at new innovative statures, bosses need their recruits to be the sorts of workers who can play well with others and excitedly join these gathering conceptualizing endeavors and front line ventures. (It's likewise only a reality that Scrum and Agile are the trendiest advancement methods. The day of the heads-down coder who exceeds expectations in the Waterfall technique has passed.) Causing yourself to appear to be presumptuous can murder your application for an occupation for comparable reasons. Regardless of whether you're a famous master, individuals most likely won't recruit you since no one needs to work with someone who is arrogant. Arrogant associates aren't available to coordinated effort. They're likewise hard to prepare, which can be significant when an organization has a great deal of procedures, techniques, and rules incorporated with their structure. Tech managers frequently need new workers to have a snappy, easy onboarding. 'Hit the ground running' is a typical expression in sets of responsibilities for tech jobs. Tell your questioner you'll be the sort of representative who is available to new procedures, open to working with others and that you realize you have a long way to go. Saying 'I'm the most qualified possibility for this activity' will do precisely the inverse. So what would you be able to state rather than this bid murdering phrase? Focus on solid approaches to represent your incentive to the questioner. Having the option to share things like this will enable possible bosses to see that you are the most qualified applicant. At the point when bosses choose you're the most qualified contender for the activity , this is significantly more remarkable than you, as the up-and-comer, attempting to lead them to this conclusion. So give the questioner what they have to see that you're really great possibility for the job. It could possibly get you an offer! Negotiating the Terms of A Job Offer A Call To Action For Companies

Negotiating the Terms of A Job Offer A Call To Action For Companies Mike is a U.S. Air Force Veteran, recently transitioned out of serving our country to pursue an internet technology (IT) career in the civilian world. He has an active security clearance, 10 years of IT management in the military and cybersecurity experience. On top of his multiple IT certifications, he has the deep leadership and execution experiences that are sought after by many companies today. Mike is a job search skills client of mine and has a brilliant resume and LinkedIn profile. He possesses excellent networking and interview skills. He has learned appropriate job offer negotiation skills and has a gracious, polite and respectful approach to making a compensation increase request. Mike received an offer in his desired field and submitted a negotiation letter to the hiring manager and recruiter. A negotiation letter can be submitted once an offer has been made. Some keys to writing an effective and professional negotiation letter include the following: Open the letter with gratitude and indicate your desire to join the company. Note: If you don’t have a strong desire to join the company (even if it meets your job requirements), do not negotiate. Simply and politely decline at the outset. Before launching into the items you would like to negotiate, say something in your letter to the effect of: “Your offer represents a significant investment on [company names] part and I sincerely appreciate that. My intent is to close on the job offer and begin working for [company name] as soon as possible. The suggested modifications below represent changes to the package that will enable a clear choice on my part.” For the body of the letter, build a table with the requested item edits in the left column and the rationale for that specific request in the right column. Example: The left side of the row may say, “Salary from X to Y.” The right side will have 1-2 bullet points saying, “Market-competitive per research” and “Will maintain my income from my prior role.” Close the letter with extreme professionalism and politeness. For example, “My sincere wish is to bring this to a successful conclusion so that I may join [company name] immediately. I hope the suggested modifications can be accommodated.” Right before the signature, include: “I am happy to discuss the requested modifications further in person or on the phone. I look forward to hearing from you soon.” What Happened To Mike? In his negotiation letter, Mike politely requested an increase of 10% on the salary offer based on his research of market-competitive salaries in his city. He presented his request promptly and professionally following my negotiation letter template. He sent the request via email and addressed both the recruiter and the hiring manager. Then he waited. And waited. Silence. After seven business days, he contacted the recruiter in the human resources department. The recruiter’s response was, “The position is no longer available.” Then Mike called the hiring manager who said, “We felt that you didn’t want the job because you did not accept the offer.” Companies Should Expect Candidates to Negotiate I’ve been on the hiring side of the table for over 30 years, building teams globally at Fortune 100 companies and startups. Partnering with recruiters and human resources departments to follow internal procedures was a balancing act I enjoyed. My favorite part was adding a personal touch to every candidate. This sort of treatment shouldnt happen toward someone who is hoping to negotiate. It starts at the top, and company CEOs and senior executives of all divisions and departments shouldnt encourage this type of culture. The company clearly wanted Mike.  They moved him from the first screen into first round interviews. Then, Mike did well in the second and third round interviews. And he was chosen to receive the offer. So why would they turn around and ignore Mike’s invitation to negotiate? Ultimately, they blamed the candidate.  A company that trusts the integrity of its candidates and respects their input is one with a positive culture. This company was the opposite of that. Of course, job seekers should be aware that a company’s goal is to find the best candidate at the mid-tier of market-competitive pay. However, it is also a candidate’s responsibility to advocate for themselves and negotiate appropriately. For Mike, it doesn’t matter who did what. What matters is that the company he was excited to work for suddenly told him no thanks. However, Mike was right to negotiate the terms and companies should anticipate some negotiation. Hiring managers and human resources have choices: They could respond quickly with a new offer meeting an applicants desires, a new offer modifying the applicants requests, a counteroffer indicating what, if anything, they could increase, or a polite response that the offer is final and that they still want the applicant. But companies repeatedly miss the opportunity to uplift their brand, shine a light on their positive culture, and treat candidates with respect and gratitude. If you are a hiring manager, be a change agent. Be that leader, hiring manager or recruiter who raises the bar on the candidate experience. It’s not so hard to do since, often, that bar is very low. If not, you could be missing out on a great, qualified candidate. This article originally appeared here on Forbes.com.

Mankind Works: Merging Technologies and People for the Workforce of the Future, the most recent book by Alexandra Levit, centers around the attributes of people, not on innovation. Lets take a gander at a couple of ways experts can stand apart from AI to stay serious and significant in the work environment. Here are some of Levits recommendations on contending with little machines: 1. Depend on passionate insight. Levit said experts must build up the abilities they have to contend with little machines: in particular sympathy, instinct, judgment, and relational affectability. Machines aren't customized for enthusiastic insight. No one but people can utilize these properties without depending on anybody to process it. Regardless of the positive business side of mechanization, the human job isn't vanishing. All things considered, it took people to fabricate and program the product and the machine. Build up these important abilities to show your worth. 2. Be cautious of how innovation is changing your vocation industrys scene. We experience how alternate routes and simplicity are the impetus for change each day. Maybe not for each change, however the demonstrating factors appear to approach setting aside cash and time. Through mindfulness, you can stay serious and line up with the patterns. Levit says, Professionals can get ready by seeing the looming disaster and taking note of the parts of their occupations well on the way to be robotized, and stretch out beyond it by reskilling into regions where human ability and qualities are as yet required. They will be increasingly fruitful in the agreement workforce on the off chance that they work on taking on new sorts of assignments in their present associations, particularly cross-useful ones, and work persistently on their own image and advertising. 3. Present this one aptitude to stick out. While aptitudes are extremely common in certain ventures, Levit says uprightness is simply the one expertise experts can separate from their opposition: respectability is one of the most basic characteristics a vocation searcher at any level can show. I think this is just going to turn out to be progressively significant as up-and-comers have more access to innovation and frameworks that might have the option to all the more effectively distort capabilities and capacities. 4. Be available to the annihilation of one all day work. Having one all day employment to meet the entirety of your money related and professional success is gradually scattering, in spite of the fact that it despite everything exists. Levit says, Full-time work wont be a relic of days gone by at any point in the near future, however it will turn out to be not so much normal but rather more experts will be pushed into the agreement workforce in any case. I figure a greater part of provisional laborers WILL work 2+ gigs without a moment's delay. This will be basic to acquire a living. Also, truly, many will think that its hard to offset new business improvement with existing work and different commitments. The possibility of todays proficient being a business of one has become animated. The steady promoting, contracting, and haggling of yourself no longer alludes to customer facing facade organizations. This is the 2019 and past careerist-the expert who should plan, execute, and get their next circumstances while completing their present one. Levit says she sees it happening effectively: An ongoing report by QuickBase represented that todays experts need to pick the innovation they use to carry out their responsibilities and having this decision is a central point in the occupations they choose to take. Associations utilizing a wide range of experts need to turn out to be increasingly adaptable and trusting of laborers with regards to the best innovation accessible to take care of business. That said; if youre struggling to work out whether you need to expand your current work force or stick with what youve got for the foreseeable future, there are five telltale signs that should help you make the distinction. 1. Your Current Staff Work Overtime Every Day: OK, so a bit of overtime every now and again is a given in any business but if your staff are working overtime every single day, its a pretty big clue that you need to consider taking on new staff. Yes, the work is getting done because your current staff members are staying behind but is it the best work that could be produced, considering its being done when your employees have already worked an eight hour day? 2. Youre Missing Deadlines: Whatever type of business you run, its highly likely that youll have set deadlines for each project and piece of work. Now, while its OK to miss a deadline here and there missing every deadline thats set can not only be damaging to your finances and the progression of your business but to your reputation too. Which leads me nicely onto point three 3. Youre Disappointing Clients: When it comes to clients, youre always going to have some that are easier to please than others but if youre not pleasing any of them, it might be time to ask yourself why. If its because of missed deadlines  or inadequate work due to overworked staff, its a pretty good bet that you need to take on new staff to deal with the workload and ensure their needs are met or risk losing them forever. Similarly, if you cant put your foot down on new projects for existing clients until youve cleared your existing backlog of work (which could take months), youre not in a great position either. Remember, sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate 5. Youre Treading Water: Pretty happy with the way things are going with your business at the moment? Thats great but wouldnt you like more? This is on the grounds that we expect that since it comes so normally to us, everybody must be acceptable at it, correct? Wrong. I Aced the Interview Why Didnt I Get the Job

I Aced the Interview Why Didn't I Get the Job I Aced the Interview: Why Didn't I Get the Job? Incredible meeting - so why not me?? It's nothing new, perhaps with somewhat of a bend: I aced the meeting. For what reason didn't I land the position? In some cases the appropriate response is directly before your nose. Be that as it may, there are times when nobody knows the appropriate response, or it's ideal to disregard it. Nobody dominates each match, unfailingly. In some cases you give a valiant effort, commit no errors, however discover you weren't the correct fit, despite the fact that you were a solid up-and-comer. At the point when the employing administrator reveals to you good luck with your undertakings, pause for a minute to investigate your meeting answers and figure out what needs improvement. Now and then it's as straightforward as the punchline. Did you convey your material in an intriguing, creative way? Or then again were your answers course reading, without any personalization? Here are a couple of models requiring a more intensive look. Set aside some effort to streamline your introduction and quit losing the employment to another applicant. An online nearness does some amazing things - or fiascos. The primary territory most applicants disregard is their online nearness. Your resume may utilize the most recent ATS strategies, is designed for upgraded execution and subtleties the best pieces of your capabilities, yet do your online records coordinate? Recruiting administrators are known for running pseudo personal investigations via web-based networking media and web journals. Your Facebook and LinkedIn accounts say a lot. We know to keep those humiliating photographs and posts disconnected. Indeed, we've all had an insane evening during our school years. Try not to impart it to the general population. A key guideline to recollect is this: If you wouldn't need a parent to see it, don't post it. Most develop experts should definitely know this. It's the subtler missteps we have to concentrate on here. Strict, political and social perspectives are one of the most troublesome parts of internet based life. They make enduring connections and torpedo you from potential professions. During the 2016 Presidential Campaign, Facebook detailed more erased companions and irate remarks than some other period. This is on the grounds that religion, governmental issues, social concerns and expert profiles don't blend. Everybody has their own perspectives. TopResume offers more exhortation about maintaining a strategic distance from internet based life botches. Practice, however don't seem unnatural. Getting ready for the huge meeting is pivotal. Rehearsing inquiries questions is basic. In any case, putting on a show of being too polished is exorbitant. A lethal error is sounding excessively arranged or practiced. Most recruiting administrators' inquiries are planned to decide how you think and respond in a crunch. They don't need arranged remarks. Recruiting chiefs need to know how you truly feel. Rehashing retained answers causes you to seem uninvolved and appear as though you're making a cursory effort. This will execute any opportunity of winning the activity. Instead of give practiced answers, take around three seconds to consider the inquiry. At that point revamp your response to fit the inquiry. One extraordinary strategy is utilizing genuine models. Answer their inquiry, and catch up with a model that qualifies your answer. Nobody loves an egotistical smarty pants. We've all been advised to gloat a little and hotshot our capacities to the employing administrator. Yet, there is a whole other world to substantiating yourself than gloating. An excess of boasting tells the recruiting supervisor you are narcissistic and presumptuous, or you care more about your own benefits than understanding the organization's objectives. In fact, it's frequently troublesome adjudicator the right proportion. A few specialists suggest the 80/20 principle. Center 80 percent of your answer towards helping the organization and 20 percent towards self-advancement. Contrast the meeting with selling a vehicle. Clearly, you need to persuade the client the vehicle has the best qualities at the best cost. In any case, you additionally need to disclose to them how your vehicle will profit them. Start each remark by straightforwardly addressing the recruiting chief's inquiry. At that point follow with a model that associates your solution to their organization. Make certain to sound proficient. The facts confirm that recruiting supervisors need the most ideally equipped individual for the activity and lean toward up-and-comers with the best understanding and abilities. Abilities and experience just take you up until now. You should convey the bundle in an expert way. Slang, misspoke words and poor language structure will execute your introduction, making you look amateurish and under-qualified. Indeed, even the sharpest, most qualified competitor can annihilate their odds by sounding amateurish. Recruiting chiefs think about your introduction, tone and discourse as a marker of how well you will perform. Utilizing words like, um and hey now are carefully disallowed. Set aside effort to talk plainly and adequately. Do whatever it takes not to think and talk simultaneously. To start with, consider your answer, at that point say it. Try not to bumble for the words. Rehearsing before a mirror or with a companion can enable your introduction to sound progressively proficient. A few characters don't play well with others. OK, so you nailed each inquiry question, introduced your best attributes in an expert way and stayed away from the haughtiness revile. Everything is great - nearly. A few people simply don't click. Possibly your characters simply didn't fit, or it was a terrible day for the questioner. It is extremely unlikely to drive a relationship. Furthermore, in the event that you begin to feel the disposition simply isn't right, this might be a marker the activity simply isn't directly for you. Nobody can control similarity. It is possible that you get along and snap or you don't. In any case, this situation is out of your control. When you finish the meeting, set aside some effort to remind yourself you are important to the workforce. Try not to quit acting naturally, and continue pushing ahead. At the point when you consider it, the abilities scouts and record administrators in the staffing business must have so as to make progress could without much of a stretch be instructed as a major aspect of an independent focus for somebody seeking after a baccalaureate degree inside the structure of human sciences/business training. The following are eight: 1. Deals aptitudes 2. A capacity to fabricate a solid system of individual and expert connections 3. A hounded assurance and reluctance to take no for an answer 4. Viable relational abilities 8. A capacity to observe the 'brain science of the applicant' While there are more than 260 Human Resources-related undergrad programs in the nation, the courses offered that are explicit to corporate selecting are restricted. Probably, understudies took a crack at HR for a significant will take courses called Attraction, Selection and Development, or potentially Talent Management. Also, that is the place the scholastic presentation into corporate selecting for the most part finishes up. That fundamental presentation doesn't establish a significant in corporate enrolling. For instance, suppose understudies were keen on learning everything they could to become scouts in the field of life sciences. What a school or college would need to do is characterize what that term means, and how it would approach giving a basic foundation around there to its understudies who needed to become selection representatives in that space. The general definition forever sciences is that it comprises of the fields of science that include the logical investigation of living life forms, for example, plants, creatures, and people, just as related contemplations like bioethics. And keeping in mind that science remains the highlight of the existence sciences, progresses in atomic science and biotechnology have prompted an expansion of specializations and interdisciplinary fields. Some of which are: biomedical science, natural chemistry, biocomputers, immunology, clinical gadgets, computational neuroscience, hereditary qualities, genomics, clinical imaging, computational neuroscience, ecological science and biomechanics, to name only 12 potential regions for concentrate inside the order. What might a HR significant's timetable resemble however? All things considered, a school could do is have its understudies take a fourth of their courses inside the existence sciences discipline. The courses chose, clearly, would rely upon what the college offered inside the existence sciences field of study. A second quarter of the understudies' course burden would be committed to relational abilities. The understudies would take an assortment of composing classes to improve their correspondence capacities. They would likewise take those classes that would assist them with getting master in the utilization of the various stages that characterize online networking. The second from last quarter of classes enlisting majors would take would be business related, so they would graduate with a comprehension of how enterprises work. Classes taken in this square would center in the regions of money, bookkeeping and insights. The last quarter of classes would be the center prerequisites all schools and colleges require for graduation with a baccalaureate degree. The theoretical situation we just portrayed for understudies keen on acquiring a college degree in enlisting, with a specialization in life sciences, holds for some other scholarly fixation. Schools and colleges, which are after all organizations, could harvest a sizable monetary fortune on the off chance that they offered corporate enlisting as an independent major. All the more significantly, be that as it may, they would be adding to a fundamental part of the economy that impacts each feature of the universe of work.
